Ornette Coleman once described the American saxophonist Pharoah Sanders as “probably the best tenor player in the world.” Living legend Sanders performed at the very first Copenhagen Jazz Festival back in 1979 – now he returns for the festival’s 40th edition this summer.

Pharoah Sanders rose to fame as an integral part of John Coltrane’s groups in the mid-1960ies. He is one of the pivotal figures in the historical development of free jazz and its spiritual branch alongside artists such as Alice Coltrane, Archie Shepp, Charles Lloyd and others. Sanders is easily recognizable and well-known for his rarified sound and technique, able to effortlessly encompass both overblowing, harmonics and multiphonics in his singular approach to the saxophone. His eminent talent was already evident in the early stages of his career, and this led his peer Albert Ayler to establish a famously biblical jazz lineage: "Trane was the Father, Pharoah was the Son, I am the Holy Ghost".<...
