Brad Mehldau Trio and Melody Gardot first headliners at the 40th edition of Copenhagen Jazz Festival
The initial headliners at the great anniversary edition of Copenhagen Jazz Festival have been confirmed: Brad Mehldau Trio are set to open the festival in Koncertsalen on Friday July 6, while songstress Melody Gardot enters the same stage on Saturday July 14. Tickets will be available for both concerts starting Wednesday December 20 from 10.00 AM.
One of the most lyrical and intimate voices of contemporary jazz piano, Brad Mehldau has forged a unique path, which embodies the essence of jazz exploration, classical romanticism and pop allure. From critical acclaim as a bandleader to major international exposure in collaborations with Pat Metheny, Renee Fleming, and Joshua Redman, Mehldau continues to garner numerous awards and admiration from both jazz purists and music enthusiasts alike. His forays into melding musical idioms, in both trio (with Larry Grenadier on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums) and solo settings, has seen brilliant re-workings of songs by contemporary songwriters like The Beatles, Cole Porter, Radiohead, Paul Simon, Gershwin and Nick Drake; alongside the ever evolving breath of his own significant catalogue of original compositions. With his self-proclaimed affection for popular music and classical training, “Mehldau is the most influential jazz pianist of the last 20 years” (The New York Times).
The 32 year old composer, guitarist, pianist and songstress Melody Gardot is quite unlike most world stars. She is at once both sensitive and expressive – a natural talent on vocals and as a songwriter, who has had to claw her way back to life through music. On July 14 2018 she returns to Denmark as a headliner in Koncertsalen during the 40th edition of Copenhagen Jazz Festival.
Melody Gardot had her big breakthrough with the album My One and Only Thrill, going on to sell 1,5 million copies since its release in 2009. The album was a joint venture, created in collaboration with the Grammy-awarded producer Larry Klein, known for his longstanding musical and marital partnership with Joni Mitchell, as well as collabs with Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Tracy Chapman and many others. 2015 saw Melody Gardot and Klein join forces yet again with the album “Currency of Man” – a transcendent mix of Jazz, Blues and Soul hailed as a musical and political milestone. The album brings together cinematic arrangements, electrical instruments and of course Gardot’s graceful voice, often compared to such greats as Nina Simone, Amy Winehouse and Norah Jones.
Like her headlining colleague Brad Mehldau, Melody Gardot is known as a captivating and unique live act.
Tickets will be available for both concerts starting Wednesday December 20 from 10.00 AM.
