Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2015 announces the complete program

The printed program for the Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2015, 3rd-12th July, is out now. The final line-up announcement means that the jazz festival can officially welcome a series of international names at Jazz by the Sea, Haveselskabets Have and Pressen/Politikens Hus together with the line-up of all the Open Air concerts.

The 37th edition of Copenhagen Jazz Festival starts in a month – and with more than 1250 concerts spread throughout approximately 100 venues in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg, the city manifests yet again that it can live up to its reputation of a diverse and progressive jazz capital. Copenhagen Jazz Festival exhibits many top international names, but at the same time manages to reflect the vivid Copenhagen jazz scene that unfolds the genre and offers improvisation, modern jazz, swing – and countless offshoots of jazz as an art form. In other words, live experiences for all: geeks and jazz newbies; children, youth and older generations; purists, party animals or avant-garde junkies.

The last announcements include American stars like Kurt Elling, Larry Graham, The Bad Plus, Joshua Redman, Yellow Jackets, Bill Frisell and Jason Moran; three separate special shows with Marilyn Mazur “Shamania”, Jakob Bro & “The Songs of Paul Motian” and Ibrahim Electric at Frederiksberg Brandstation, together with the new world music theme Urban World Nights in Pressen/Politikens Hus with Orlando Julius og Totó la Momposina. The ticket sales just started.

To celebrate the release of the printed program and this year’s artists poster for the Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2015 designed by Julie Nord, a big release party is taking place on June 1st at 19:00. It all happens in Koncertkirken with live jazz, DJs, Tuborg Classic and the chance to get a copy of the program fresh from the print.

The top of this year’s program depicts three phenomenal but also very different stellar duos. The historical duo appearance featuring Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock has been sold out for months. Another couple of excellent musicians are Brazilians Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, who have been musical ambassadors for their homeland since the Tropicalia movement at the end of 60s. The third and, by far, most glamorous couple consists of Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, performing at Plænen in Tivoli in the middle of the festival week with “Cheek To Cheek”. Other headliners include Dr. John (US), Dianne Reeves (US), Brad Mehldau Trio (US), Salif Keita (ML), Al Jarreau (US), Jamie Cullum (UK), Savage Rose (DK), Rhiannon Giddens (US), Michel Camilo (DO), David Sanborn (US), Lizz Wright (US) and more…

Jazz clubs and the year-round active organizers run a well-made and compelling Danish-international program, which this year includes: Ambrose Akinmusire (US), Fire! Orchestra (SE), Palle Mikkelborg (DK), Gary Peacock (US), Enrico Pieranunzi (IT), Joe Lovano (US), Miguel Zenón (PR), Kenny Barron (US), Kirk Lightsey (US), Vijay Iyer Trio (US), Charles Hayward (UK), David Liebman (US), The Thing (SE/NO), Felix Kubin (DE), Nate Wooley (US), etc.

As usual the concert themes are a great way to navigate the Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Jazz by the Sea at Kulturhuset Islands Brygge offers American jazz stars combined with a few Danish favorites. A deeper focus on vocal jazz can be experienced in Haveselskabets Have with Kurt Elling, Sinne Eeg, The Cabin Project and Tuva Semmingsen and a few detours with Jacob Anderskov and Marilyn Mazur. And in Pressen/Politikens Hus you are invited to three dance evenings with African, South American and Thai focus under the title “Urban World Nights”.

Free concerts will take place at the usual locations such as Kongens Have, Vandkunsten, Sankt Hans Torv, Balders Plads and Amager Strandpark, which is one of approximately 20 new festival venues. There is five days with free Jazz for Kids at Søndermarken, a new raw scene with progressive Danish music at Niels Hemmingsens Gade, and last but not least the concert series 21st Century Jazz at Skuespilhuset’s Foyer with award winning Danish names such as Maria Faust, Jeppe Zeeberg, Søren Ulrik Thomsen & Det Glemte Kvarter.

The official festival app is expected to be released 10th of June, and the International Guide to Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2015 will be released 2nd of July.
