Berlinde Deman (BE)
The serpent, a twisted, snake-like wooden instrument, is a predecessor to the tuba. Originating in Gregorian chant traditions, it later found its way into French military music in the 18th century before fading into obscurity.
Belgian tuba player and improviser Berlinde Deman, best known as a member of the groundbreaking improvisation ensemble Flat Earth Society Orchestra, has revived this mysterious instrument. She has developed a repertoire of improvised drone landscapes that highlight the serpent’s warm tones, circular breathing techniques, and electronic effects. The result is a captivating sonic universe, where deep frequencies create the backdrop for a stark, minimalist soundscape one can lose themselves in.
