Jakob Bro
Jakob Bro (b. 1978 in Aarhus) is one of the leading voices in Danish jazz. Based in Copenhagen, he has collaborated with a remarkable range of international artists – from Midori Takada, Joe Lovano, and Wadada Leo Smith to Charles Lloyd, Brian Blade, and Palle Mikkelborg. His music is the subject of the award-winning documentary Music for Black Pigeons(Jørgen Leth & Andreas Koefoed), which premiered at the Venice Biennale.
As a bandleader, Bro has released more than 20 albums, including several on the renowned ECM Records label, working with musicians such as Lee Konitz, Bill Frisell, Paul Motian, Andrew Cyrille, and Thomas Morgan.
His trilogy Balladeering (2009), Time (2011), and December Song (2013) was nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize, and his work has earned him numerous honors, including the Carl Prize, Danish Music Award, and support from the Danish Arts Foundation.Politiken has described his music as “a new future for jazz,” while DownBeat has called it “magical and impossible to capture.
The Village Vanguard
Since 1935, the Village Vanguard in Greenwich Village, New York, has been a sacred space for jazz lovers. Its intimate basement room, with its unparalleled acoustics, has hosted concerts by some of the greatest names in jazz – including Bill Evans and John Coltrane – and continues to be a touchstone for musicians and audiences around the world. Today, the club is run by Deborah Gordon, who welcomes us with her personal stories and insider knowledge of this iconic venue. You will also meet Jed Eisenman, who have worked at the Village Vanguard since 1981 in different capacities. Today his main job is to book musicians....
