Get ready to step into a parallel universe of groove-saturated funk and cinematic flair when the German band Seoi Nage turns up the heat at Stengade on February 20th!
"The album is steeped in cinematic funk, lo-fi psychedelia, and Krautrock-style repetition—evoking dusty asphalt, leather jackets, and analog tape machines. Here, the car chase from *The French Connection*, the martial arts of Bruce Lee, and the color-drenched horror of Dario Argento converge in a universe that is simultaneously sexy, kitschy, and irresistibly stylish. Vintage isn’t just a choice—it’s a dogma." – Devilution Review

Seoi Nage:
Playing it cool like it's 1974! However, what’s drifting out of those bass-heavy speakers actually originates from the year 2025 and goes by the name of Seoi Nage, who are introduced themselves with their debut album—a hybrid of 1970s funk and film scores bridging the gap between Eastern martial arts movies and Italian Giallo. It's detective music, but far from Noir; instead, it is captured in vibrant, neon colors, complete with car chases, hedonism, and the occasional fistfight. The name Seoi Nage—a judo throw—was a quick and obvious choice due to their shared martial arts past when the four musicians met in Münster a few years ago.
The lineup features Jakob Hersch (Taishogoto), Anton Zimmermann (drums), Pascal Schaumburg (electric guitar & synthesizer), and Pogo McCartney (bass guitar, electric guitar, percussion, synthesizer & piano), the latter acting as the group's mastermind. In recent years, this studio project also repeatedly ventured live onto the stage, accompanied by film projections by Simon Büchting, who provides the perfect visual counterpart to the retroesque sound. Following an initial EP, they presented a full-length release without any commercial breaks: NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER.
Across the eleven tracks of their debut album, Seoi Nage sound like a cinematic quote—perhaps even better played than the original. Entirely instrumental, the music knows how to tell stories, serving up a crime thriller without words; at times sleazy, captured in the playful, lighthearted unseriousness of a bygone decade. It is martial arts cinema transformed into sound. And just like in artful, Far Eastern martial arts, the eleven tracks from McCartney's screenplay present themselves in aesthetic perfection. Under his direction, four musicians have come together who could not harmonize any better.
If the kind of vibrant cinema that is musically reminisced here still existed, this quartet would be the dream cast for the soundtrack! Interspersed with movie samples from half a century ago, it also possesses a youthful affinity for pop akin to the entirely different genre of hip-hop and sampling legend MF Doom (who passed away in 2020). Here, this also signifies an attitude towards the material: music is always a quotation, meant as a bow of respect and a playful yet reverent continuation. In doing so, Seoi Nage dive into distant sonic realms, practice daring musical architecture, and conjure up imaginary spirits to ultimately stimulate the listener's imagination through the supposed escapism of their fictional scores. If there were ever a specific section in a record store for this kind of sound, it would be labeled "Fan Art Music."
