Emi Makabe / Thomas Morgan (JP/US)

No advance tickets

Emi Makabe is a vocalist and composer based in New York City. Her songs, described by New York Music Daily as "rapturous, adventurous Japanese folk-influenced jazz", encompass jazz, pop, classical, and improvised music, as well as her background in Japanese music. She performs in renowned New York City jazz clubs such as the 55 Bar and Cornelia Street Café, singing in English and Japanese as well as wordlessly, and playing piano and shamisen, a Japanese traditional string instrument.

This set of Makabe's original songs features double bassist Thomas Morgan, who has played in the bands of some of the most influential jazz artists of the past two decades: Bill Frisell, Jakob Bro, Paul Motian, Craig Taborn, Tyshawn Sorey, Steve Coleman, and many others. "His warm and serious bass tone can assimilate itself into almost any band, becoming the music's sturdy architecture without compromising his own blunt power" (New York Times).

Line up:
