She is the daughter of jazz guitarist Fritz von Bülow. As a teenager, she started playing flute and later switched to alto saxophone, which has been her main instrument ever since. From 1986 to 1990, she reviewed the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen. In 1990, von Bülow received private lessons at Stan Getz in his home in Malibu just a year before he died. Another source of inspiration has been Lee Konitz. Bülow also has strong roots in Brazilian music.

She has been the leader of her own ensembles for a number of years and was especially known from 1993 with trio Christina von Bülow Trio (Jacob Fischer, guitar, Jens Skou Olsen, bass), who started a collaboration with the Swedish trumpeter Jan Allan, with whom von Bülow recorded his first album in his own name in 1994.
