HOLON Trio is a New York/Berlin based piano trio with internationally renowned
musicians from Sweden, Denmark and Germany. In 2016 they released their debut album
“HOLON” on Mons Records, which was very positively received by both national and
international press. Wolf Kampmann wrote about the trio's debut work:
“... What makes this CD so special is a feeling of closeness and involvement. They give the listener
the opportunity to be right in the middle and still let the music flow through them. (...) One would
wish for this honesty in dealing with oneself more often in contemporary jazz."
(Jazzthing, issue 9/10, 2016)

Over the course of the last six years, the three musicians have grown together more and
more through their playing experience of their Europe-wide tours. With their second
album Shields Down (Berthold Records), they present an incredibly honest and at the same
time, forward-looking album. As part of the trio, the three award-winning musicians have
the opportunity to transform their distinctive individualism and their emotions into music
in an intimate atmosphere and pass them on to the audience. They use the sound of the
acoustic piano trio and expand it through electronic elements and an original take on the
format through concise and unique sound. The trio creates a very contrasting and
innovative program in which the compositional voices of all three musicians come into
play. In this way they manage to draw a homogeneous common thread through the music
that makes it easy for the audience to connect with.
The term "holon" - originally from ancient Greek - means a whole, which
at the same time is part of a larger whole.
The three musicians of the HOLON Trio Povel Widestrand (SE), Mathias Højgaard Jensen
(DK) and Lukas Akintaya (DE/NGA) take this term to heart as a band name and as an
outline of their musical cosmos. The music of HOLON Trio, alternates between
experimental electronic elements, avant-garde, alternative rock and song elements. The
trio has performed since its inception
so far more than 120 concerts in six countries and is among other things a prizewinner of
the
European Young Jazz Prize Burghausen.
"The Holon Trio is a rejuvenation for the piano trio format. They captivate with their somewhat
different approach to this supposedly worn-out format, the celebration of
fresh harmonies and rhythms, the palpable desire for interplay, the non-stop discovering of new
ways.”
Reinhard Köchl (Jazzthetic)
“With calm detachment, the trio embraces a soundscape that is stylistically hard to pin down,
gently grooving, rhythmically reminiscent of Abdullah Ibrahim's African musical soulwandering
or in meditative moments daydreaming like Bill Evans. Somehow there is always a piece of
Scandinavian soul with there. (...)”...
