Jazz in The Golden Age: Danish jazz frontier-seeking pianist Nikolaj Bentzon's family heritage forms an important part of Danish cultural heritage. Most know J.P.E. Hartmann, one of Denmark's most acknowledged composers and a leading cultural figure in Denmark during the Romantic era. Few people are probably familiar with his first wife, Emma Hartmann, who under a pseudonym managed to publish a number of piano pieces, songs and romances towards the end of her short life (1807-1851). Even fewer know that she happens to be the great-grandmother of pianist Nikolaj Bentzon.
On Nikolaj Bentzon Trio’s latest album from the autumn of 2021 "Arvegods" – in English “Inheritance” – music from the Danish Golden Age is brought to life when the trio together with vocalist Tuva Semmingsen dive into Emma Hartmann's compositions and interpret her songs through the sphere of jazz.
