Few people are probably familiar with his first wife, Emma Hartmann, who under a pseudonym managed to publish a number of piano pieces, songs and romances towards the end of her short life (1807-1851). Even fewer know that she happens to be the great-grandmother of pianist Nikolaj Bentzon.
On Nikolaj Bentzon Trio’s latest album from the autumn of 2021 "Arvegods" – in English “Inheritance” – music from the Danish Golden Age is brought to life when the trio together with vocalist Tuva Semmingsen dive into Emma Hartmann's compositions and interpret her songs through the sphere of jazz.
Emma Hartmann is one of the few Danish female composers from the Danish Golden Age period. She never got to experience her songs’ popularity in the 2nd half of the 19th century due to life that ended in childbirth at the age of just 44 years old. Nor did she experience when Wilhelm Hansen published a complete edition of her works in 1882, which on the title page stated that the pseudonym Frederik Palmer was used instead of Emma Hartmann.
With Matthias Petri on double bass, Espen Laub von Lillienskjold on drums and classically trained Tuva Semmingsen on vocals, Bentzon Trio interprets and presents Emma Hartmann's compositions. The concert takes place in Ydun Salen in Vesterbro. Ydun Salen functions on a daily basis as a meeting room at Nordic Artists Management, but in exceptional cases such as this, the room is transformed into a small concert hall. Ydun Salen is beautifully decorated in original Golden Age art by Constantin Hansen (1804-1880) and Georg Wilker (1807-1875). It is for both ears and eyes when the golden age meets jazz.
Emma Hartmann's songs are performed in concert in Ydun Hall, in Vesterbro. On a daily basis Ydun Hall functions as office to Nordic Artists Management, but on few occasions such as this, the room is transformed into a small exclusive concert hall. Ydun Hall is beautifully decorated with original paintings by Danish Golden Age artists Constantin Hansen (1804-1880) and Georg Wilker (1807-1875). Both ears and eyes will experience jazz in the Golden Age....
