Grønvad-Søndergaard Quintet
There is a carefree basic mood about vibraphonist Morten Grønvad's tribute to Clare Fischer. He got to know the American west coast jazz legend when he lived for six months in Los Angeles in 1996. Fischer died in 2012 - and Grønvad subsequently played with his son Brent Fischer at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Brent has very appropriately written the album's liner notes.
The style is west coast Latin jazz, standing on top of the breeze from the 50s cool jazz and the early 60s inspiration from Brazil. Grønvad has teamed up with alto saxophonist Jens Søndergaard, who steps into the role of Bud Shank, another west coast legend with whom Fischer made the record Bossa Nova Jazz Samba in 1962. The Danish quintet also plays three tracks from it, where Carnaval and Wistful Samba is made for a cocktail on a summer evening.
