Johannes Gammelgaard Kvartett feat. Mikko Innanen
Johannes Gammelgaard is a Danish saxophonist and composer based in Stockholm, where he leads his own quartet. For this concert, he has handpicked three prominent musicians from the Scandinavian jazz scene, who will perform numbers from the quartet's debut album I venners lag (Jaeger Community Music, 2021) as well as completely newly written music. As a special guest, they have invited Finnish saxophonist Mikko Innanen, Gammelgaard's former teacher at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and a personal role model for many years.
The music sounds like a mixture of 1960s jazz and Scandinavian music tradition, played with lots of energy, swing and humour. Melodic compositions are replaced by freely improvised passages, and all in all, the music contains a wide spectrum of moods from childlike joy to brooding melancholy.
