In 2023, Abekejser released a crossover project with Karmen Roivasepp under the name Wonder Who, further expanding their musical horizons and exploring new sonic landscapes.
Although all four musicians have backgrounds in jazz and world music, Abekejser long ago tossed the double bass onto the fire along with the closed templates of tradition. Instead, the band builds its sound on a foundation of strong beats created through a mix of electronic samples and acoustic drums. Layered on top is a massive sound of crackling synthesizers and effects-drenched guitars delivering epic harmonies and infectious melodies.
“We create an instrumental portal to a foreign universe, where tight beats, playful improvisation, and groovy hooks melt together. Abekejser’s music carries complex undertones, but our goal is to build bridges and open up a musical world that might otherwise seem intimidating. We prefer playing venues with a bar—where the bass can hit hard enough to really get into people’s bodies,” says guitarist Jeppe Lavsen....
