Pianist Nikolaj Hess and vocalist Ane Trolle are both pioneers in their respective fields on the rich and experimental Danish jazz and improvisation scene. For more than 15 years, they have circled around each other as individual artists in various groups and constellations. Now, they come together on stage with a band formed for the occasion—in an open and welcoming space where there's room to play with each other, the moment, and the audience.

As a pianist, composer, producer, artistic director, and educator, Nikolaj Hess has left a significant mark on both Danish and international jazz, as well as crossover classical music. His compositions, arrangements, and improvisations span everything from solo piano to ensembles ranging from duos to tentets, film scores, classical groups, symphony orchestras, and choirs. Hess has a strong connection to NYC, where he works with, among others, the rhythm section of Tony Scherr and Kenny Wollesen, and saxophonist Marc Mommaas. He is also well known for his collaborations with his brothers, saxophonist Emil Hess and Mikkel Hess, particularly in ensembles like 3xHess, Spacelab, and the electronic project Hess Is More. Most recently, Nikolaj Hess has drawn attention with his artistic research project Transformative Reflections, which explores translating artistic practices from one field to another—specifically from visual art to jazz and improvisation.

Vocalist Ane Trolle has firmly established her name and distinctive voice in genre-bending Danish music projects such as Balstyrko, Trolle//Siebenhaar, JaConfetti, and Diamond Mouth. Whether singing in Danish or English, her vocals always transport the listener into a captivated, almost hypnotic state. In 2012, she released her debut album as a solo singer and songwriter, Honest Wall, which received widespread praise from both Danish and international music critics. Ane Trolle also excels in improvising—both lyrically and melodically.

Together, Ane Trolle and Nikolaj Hess will build upon their recent improvised duo concerts. Their collaboration is an ongoing musical dialogue that continues to evolve every time they perform together. The musicians will also draw on their personal catalogs, offering reinterpretations and improvisations over more familiar material.

The concert promises to be a diverse experience, flowing between jazz and folk influences to more pop-oriented sounds, between the fluid and the fragmented, and across known and unknown sonic landscapes. The Ane Trolle and Nikolaj Hess special will give the audience insight into each artist’s current creative outlook, while jointly creating an exploratory project space that offers new inspiration for them both....
