This evening, we pay tribute to two of the greatest: our own bass giant Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen (NHØP) and the American tenor giant Sonny Rollins.

NHØP left an enormous mark on the global jazz scene, and in his wake, many Danish bassists have emerged, each leaving their own imprint on international jazz.

The latest in this line is Thomas Fonnesbæk, a Ben Webster Award recipient, whose virtuosic playing draws clear lines back to NHØP.

Sonny Rollins was a frequent visitor to Copenhagen throughout the 1960s, often performing in the trio format with our own NHØP and various drummers.

He has been a huge inspiration for many tenor saxophonists, including Claus Waidtløw, who together with Thomas Fonnesbæk and Janus Templeton, will perform classic Rollins pieces as well as well-known standards from Rollins’ repertoire.
