THE TIPTONS SAXOPHONE QUARTET & DRUMS (The
Tiptons) is an internationally renowned all-female
saxophone and drums quartet, celebrating over 30 years of
activity.
Formed in 1988 in Seattle, Washington, by Seattle Jazz Hall of Fame inductee Amy
Denio (alto saxophone, clarinet, vocals), she is joined by co-leader Jessica Lurie
(soprano/alto/tenor saxophone, vocals), Sue Orfield (tenor saxophone, vocals), Tina
Richerson (baritone saxophone, vocals), and Robert Kainar (drums, percussion) from
Salzburg, Austria.
The Tiptons' repertoire ranges from micro-Big Band to Gospel, from Bluegrass to
Balkan, from eccentric Chamber Jazz to nocturnal Funk to Free Jazz improvisation,
using saxophones, clarinet, their own voices, drums, and creative percussion to

Like Billy, the Tiptons have developed a personal and eclectic approach to their
musical vision, creating some of the most innovative sounds on the
jazz/world/pop scene today.
All band members are accomplished composers, band leaders, and improvisers.
Their dynamic and playful performances are always characterized by high-energy
interaction between these virtuoso musicians and their audience.
The Tiptons have received numerous commissions and grants to compose, produce
multimedia performances and collaborate with international artists. The ensemble
has performed at festivals worldwide since 1993 and has led improvisation and
composition workshops worldwide for people of all ages and musical abilities.
They have composed scores for film, modern dance, radio, and television
internationally; most recently, their distinctive sound was used in an episode of the
Norwegian television series "The Oil Fund."...
