The orchestra was formed in 1990 on the initiative of Preben Nissen. The background for the formation was the desire to play a repertoire consisting of gospel, spirituals, hymns and traditional jazz. Music with deep roots in the foundations of New Orleans jazz.

The Spirit at New Orleans has performed with international soloists with great success, just as the individual musicians have been soloists in other bands.
