Raised in Tokyo and Hong Kong, Makiko received classical piano training from an early age, before discovering her love for jazz at Berklee College of Music in the U.S.
As a child, Makiko would listen to her mother sing Handel’s Messiah every year — “the music became part of me; it’s a great gift that I can now pass on in a new version, in my own language.”
