Surrender to the trance at ALICE in the summer heat. French-Malagasy Bobo & Behaja fuse the hectic, high-energy sounds of tsapiky with rock and free jazz, transforming the concert hall into a dusty dance party during this year’s Copenhagen Jazz Festival. We’re excited to present them as they take over ALICE this July.
Bobo & Behaja is a French-Malagasy quintet exploring the vibrant tones and intense rhythms of tsapiky – a relatively young trance music style that emerged at traditional bals-poussière (dusty dance parties) in southwestern Madagascar in the late 1970s. In the meeting between musicians from the French band Electric Vocuhila and the virtuosic tsapiky group Behaja, an irresistible and high-energy sound takes shape. Raspy sax, electric guitar and fast-paced tsapiky rhythms merge in a boundary-pushing interplay between free jazz and rock – resulting in something deeply engaging, danceable and hypnotic.
