To call Cécile McLorin Salvant a phenomenon in modern jazz is almost an understatement. Salvant, whose voice has been compared to icons such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Dianne Reeves, is a unique figure who effortlessly manages to bridge the gap between the classic virtues of jazz, blues, baroque and folk music and theater.
The American singer, composer, visual artist, etc. has once again managed to cross genre boundaries across jazz, pop, soul and even EDM with her latest, critically acclaimed album, “Oh Snap” (2025), in the company of her long-time musical companion, the Grammy-winning pianist and composer Sullivan Fortner. The result is one of Salvant’s strongest and most personal works to date.
Brandee Younger is among the few big names in jazz history with the harp as her main instrument and is described by several critics as the primary driving force behind the instrument’s comeback in recent years. In 2022, she became the first African-American woman ever to receive a Grammy nomination in the Best Instrumental Composition category for the song “Beautiful Is Black”. The song is from her breakthrough album “Somewhere Different” (2021) – the first on the iconic Coltrane record label Impulse! Records, which also issued her latest, eighth album, “Gadabout Season” (2025).
Inspired by harp heroines of the past such as Alice Coltrane and the shamefully overlooked Dorothy Parker, Younger acts as a link between the jazz harpists of the time and the “new” generation of jazz musicians, who mix elements from hip hop, jazz, soul and funk – from the soft sound of the harp to more raw modern fusions. Her talent has enabled her to build bridges between a wide range of different expressions through collaborations with artists such as Pharoah Sanders, Jack Dejohnette, Lauryn Hill, Charlie Haden, John Legend, The Roots, Makaya McCraven and others.
Copenhagen Jazz Festival and DR Koncerthuset are proud to present a unique double concert with two of modern jazz’s special phenomena....
