It was Thelonious Monk that sparked Jason Moran's interest in jazz. His Texas upbringing was filled with classical piano lessons, hip hop – and skateboards – but at the age of 13 he heard Monk's "Round Midnight" at home among his parents' considerable record collection and was immediately fascinated by the simple melodies and unfamiliar harmonies. Later, he came under the musical wings of Mingus pianist Jaki Byard, whose eclectic approach to jazz must have influenced the young Moran.
In February 2026, the album "Jason Moran Plays Duke Ellington" was released to great reviews. Another dive into jazz history and the result of six years of focus on one of history's greatest rhythmic composers. Jason Moran has been a frequent guest here in a number of different constellations – most recently with Charles Lloyd at Bremen Teater in 2024. When he visits Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2026 and DR Koncerthuset this summer, it will be with a solo concert with Duke Ellington as a brilliant guiding star....
