Svaneborg Kardyb originates from Aalborg in northern Jutland, where the idea of starting a duo was first discussed back in 2013. However, six years would pass before the project came to light.
As a duo, Svaneborg Kardyb has plenty of space to fill—or leave empty. “We enjoy the minimalism and the focus it brings to our interplay. We come from quite different musical backgrounds—Nikolaj from Scandinavian jazz and Jonas from roots, blues, and folk—so our music is essentially the sum of our contributions. It doesn’t try to be more than that. It’s pretty unique to share this musical language and friendship.”

This is something the duo has demonstrated over hundreds of concerts and through three full-length albums. Now, Svaneborg Kardyb is set to release their fourth album, Superkilen. With this album, Nikolaj Svaneborg and Jonas Kardyb aim to create music that stays true to the style they’ve presented in earlier releases—Knob, Haven, and Over Tage—while also opening up new directions.
“All the tracks are recorded live, with us sitting across from each other. Being in the studio is often magical for us. We hit record, and then we don’t now what’s going to happen. Of course, we have ideas and pieces with us, but nothing is set in stone or fully arranged when we arrive. The tracks always find their final form during the recordings. There’s a lot of improvisation, and we make a conscious effort to capture new ideas and explore new paths.”
Svaneborg Kardyb’s music is the antithesis of the fast, superficial world of social media and fleeting ideas. In the process of making this new album, they’ve delved into other areas of their musical universe—introducing more synths and effects, as well as faster, more aggressive drumming. As a result, the album contains both their familiar, understated fragility and some wilder, more intense moments than before....
