Seu Jorge presents “The Life Aquatic: A Tribute to David Bowie” in DR Koncerthuset
In celebration of David Bowie’s legacy, Seu Jorge, cult star of the Wes Anderson film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, performs a special tribute to the late genius at Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2018 on July 13.
Having risen to fame from his role as Pelé dos Santos, a singing sailor of delicate, acoustic renditions of David Bowie hits, Seu Jorge’s unique versions have become a point of celebration and reflection upon the passing of the creative icon. His recording The Life Aquatic Sessions was given stunning reviews upon its release in 2006, and little did they realise the lasting impact Seu Jorge’s interpretations could hold, subtly underscoring the breadth and depth of David Bowie’s compositions.
‘Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs in Portuguese, I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with.’ David Bowie.
Seu Jorge is one of Brazil’s most talented and acclaimed artists. A musician, singer/songwriter and actor from Rio de Janeiro, known for his film roles in the 2002 film City of God and as Pelé dos Santos in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. When he was 19, he became homeless and remained homeless for three years; nonetheless, his musical talent flourished when he was living in the streets and he became known in the favelas. He is considered by a renewer of Brazilian pop samba. Seu Jorge cites samba schools, and Jorge Ben, Milton Nascimento and Stevie Wonder as major musical influences. His musical work has received praise from many of his fellow musicians including Beck and Bowie.
Despite releasing the original soundtrack The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions 12 years ago, Seu Jorge only began playing the album live recently at a limited series of prestigious venues including Royal Albert Hall, Sydney Opera House, Primavera Sound and a special appearance at The Hollywood Bowl, in honour of the The Thin White Duke’s heartbreaking passing. Described by Bowie himself as giving the songs ‘a new level of beauty’, Jorge rewired the likes of ”Ziggy Stardust’, ‘Changes’, ‘Space Oddity’ and ‘Starman’ with Portuguese lyrics and an acoustic guitar to stunning effect.
