What happens when Cuban musicians from different cities, generations and musical worlds meet on stage for one night?
On July 7, Nova Concerts Series brings together four remarkable Cuban artists currently working in Europe for an evening of original jazz shaped by Afro-Cuban rhythmic language, contemporary improvisation and diaspora energy.
At the centre is Jay Kalo. Born in Havana, the 27-year-old drummer and composer plays with the force and maturity of someone far beyond his years. Trained at Cuba's Escuela Nacional de Arte and twice winner of Cuba's International Drum Festival, he was only 17 when he performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center alongside Wynton Marsalis.
Since then, he has worked with Omara Portuondo, shared the stage with Alain Pérez, and driven the rhythm of Roberto Carcassés' Interactivo — one of the most influential projects in contemporary Cuban music. In 2021, he moved from Havana to Barcelona. On July 7, he comes to Copenhagen for the first time.
Joining him is Havana-born pianist Aismar Simón Carrillo — a musician who has performed at Montreux Jazz Festival, Glastonbury, Umbria Jazz and the Edinburgh International Festival. Composer, arranger and pianist, Aismar moves between Cuban rhythmic memory and contemporary jazz with a sound that is powerful, precise and unmistakably his own.
On bass, Yasser Morejon Pino brings the authority of a musician deeply connected to Havana's jazz language and Copenhagen's contemporary rhythm scene. On congas and percussion, Eliel Lazo — one of Copenhagen's most celebrated Cuban musicians, a Danish Music Award winner, and a percussionist whose career includes collaborations with Chucho Valdés, Herbie Hancock and the Danish Radio Big Band — brings the music into full motion.
This is a one-night constellation: four Cuban voices, one stage, and a sound moving freely between memory and now.
