"The roots of both culture and musical tradition are essential to create real renewal while at the same time looking to the future." - This is the focal point of the project “Radici” (Roots), which explores and presents a repertoire based on the origin of jazz – the blues – understood in its broadest musical, historical and social meaning. The blues is an expression that has permeated more than a century of music and has had women as central figures: as some of the first social commentators and as strong voices of rebellion, borne by an awareness of a long history of cultural oppression. These women have been able to express through music their dissatisfaction with living conditions that were often characterized by marginalization and degradation.
At the same time, “roots” are the basis of every story – including Italian culture and music, where jazz has become an integral part today.
The project is intended as a continuation of the musical study that Ada Montellanico began with "Abbey’s Road", her tribute to Abbey Lincoln. Based on the deeper layers of the blues, the project moves towards an original repertoire, where historical musical expressions are reinterpreted in a new and contemporary idiom. This is done through a special sonic chemistry in the trio format with vocals, piano and trombone. Together with Montellanico, two exceptional musicians: Simone Graziano on piano and Filippo Vignato on trombone.
The concert ranges from new interpretations of traditional songs to works with a clear social commitment (Bessie Smith, Dinah Washington, Tracy Chapman, Ida Cox, Abbey Lincoln, Carla Bley, etc.) as well as original compositions written specifically for this trio with the intention of maintaining the raw, sensual and at the same time modern sound that has made the blues a universal language....
