Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil met at the University in Bahia in 1963. Here is where the musical collective, which also included Gal Costa, Tom Zé and Caetano’s sister Maria Bethânia emerged. In 1968 Gilberto Gil released the acclaimed album “Tropicalia: Ou Panis a Circenses” which was deeply inspired by the Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band “. The songs and the sound of the album gave life to Tropicalismo movement, and the Brazilian government at that time began to feel threatened by the revolutionary energies that the music was full of. In 1969, both Veloso and Gil were arrested, and the two friends had to spend a few exile years in London before they could return back home again in 1972.

Today can both Gil and Veloso look back on their amazing careers, which include dozens of awards and status of international ambassadors for Brazilian music.

Gilberto Gil has performed several times in Copenhagen in the last 10 years, while Caetano Veloso has only been here for a concert at the Royal Theatre during Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2010. It is a bit of a sensation that the two can be seen on the same stage during this year’s Copenhagen Jazz Festival. We are talking about a musical summit of the highest level, or a great Brazilian reunification…

Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil join the list of headliners at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2015 on 3-12th July, which also includes the historic duo encounter between Herbie Hancock & Chick Corea (US) and Brad Mehldau Trio (US) in the DR Concert Hall, and Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga (US) in Tivoli. The full program of the festival will be presented in the spring.
