Rökkur, the Icelandic word for twilight, invites you into the sonic universe of Norwegian performing composer Maja S. K. Ratkje and the Icelandic ensemble Nordic Affect (Halla Steinunn Stefánsdóttir, Marie Stockmarr Becker, Hanna Loftsdóttir, Guðrún Óskarsdóttir).
Nordic Affect has been hailed as a “multi-disciplinary force of nature” (A Closer Listen) and for “ineffable synergy between the performers” (San Francisco Classical Voice). Founded in 2005, Nordic Affect has created a highly unique voice, which has earned the group international recognition. All the while, Maja S. K. Ratkje is at the forefront of the musical avant-garde, starting with her much hailed debut album Voice in 2002. Their collaboration begun in 2019 and this concert comes in the wake of an album release on the Øra Fonogram label.
Twilight is the hour when shadows fall, a time of transition, ambiguity, and magic. When ‘rökkur’ fell in pre-electric times, a space appeared for storytelling, reading, yarn spinning, singing, or even a dreamlike state of dozing. Inspired by this shared tradition, Maja S. K. Ratkje and ensemble Nordic Affect have embarked on a sonic journey allowing ‘rökkur’ to become a path for morphing and shifting between the familiar, the atmosphere from the past, and the yet to be imagined future.
Since their first appearance together at Dark Music Days in Iceland in 2019, their music making has evolved in relation to each new performance, always exploring and revealing new shades of noise and timbre. Ratkje blends her extended vocals with the Baroque instrumental sound of Nordic Affect, at times treated and re-established in real-time by the cyborg electronic extensions of Ratkje’s live electronics.
de Heney / Wikström (SE/DK)
Nina de Heney and Qarin Wikström are both remarkable profiles from the Scandinavian improvising music environment. Both of them have branded themselves as artists with uncompromising musicality, deeply personal expressions, and sensitive interplay.
De Heney and Wikström started their collaboration in 2018, and immediately found their interplay to be both curious and direct. Since then, they have been performing together as a duo. Their debut album QOMOLANGMA, was released in June 2023 on Outerdisk.
Words on Qomolangma:
”Acoustic electronics meet electronic acoustics in an inspired and most touching dream state. De Heney and Wikström do not only mirror their most immediate instincts and their vulnerable expressions and vibrations but suggest a cosmic mirror of eternal creation, from the heavenly Mother Earth Goddess to our daily lives.” – Eyal Hareuveni, Salt Peanuts...
