Discovering jazz in Denmark

“I listened to Ornette Coleman play at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival some years back, and it was mesmerising. All of a sudden completely out of the blue something happened in that music that changed me. Like a gathering of energy that seemed to be completely natural and yet overwhelming and surprising – it’s mysterious”, explains Jakob of his love for jazz. From these unassuming beginnings, he has to date received five Danish Music Awards and has been accepted into Jazz Denmark’s Hall of Fame.

The guitarist has played at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival every year since 1999, saying that every year has been different and enjoyable. “The Jazz Festival uses the entire city of Copenhagen as its venue, and Copenhagen is a beautiful city. It’s got a very welcoming atmosphere. You can play avantgarde or New Orleans or whatever- – the important thing is the love for music and for improvisation”, he enthuses. Of the jazz scene in Copenhagen, Jakob says that there are so many interesting musicians, composers and bands; Copenhagen’s music scene is thriving. This year Jakob recommends that you not miss Jesper Zeuthen Trio at KoncertKirken on the 9th of July.
