Five American super stars
All five American artists have previously visited Copenhagen Jazz Festival with great success. Larry Graham kicked off a real funk party at Islands Brygge in 2011, the legendary jazz band Yellowjackets have a large following worldwide, and Jason Moran’s latest visit left Politiken’s music editor so invigorated that he gave the show six stars saying, “The applause refused to stop after an outrageous party “. Moran is returning to Copenhagen with the complete version of his large-scale tribute project to Fats Waller (1904-1943).

Bill Frisell and Joshua Redman have both played at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival before as headliners, and this time they come with two awesome current projects. Joshua Redman is the guest star, and an untraditional addition to, in all ways unconventional, humorous and provocative trio The Bad Plus, together with which he has just released an album The Bad Plus Joshua Redman. And Bill Frisell, who on his latest quartet album Guitar In The Space Age delivers interpretations of i.a. Brian Wilson, Joe Meek, Pete Seeger and Link Wray, has requested to play an open and festive venue – and he is gets to round off the international program at Jazz by the Sea on the festival’s last Saturday, July 11th.

Danish noir, Brazilian jazz and French experimental pianist
From the Danish scene you have a chance to experience the seasoned singer and songwriter Niels Skousen, who in autumn released the very personal album Smil eller Dø (Smile or Die), which received the prestigious Steppeulven award in the category “Lyricist of the Year”. Expect an ignitable encounter when Faroese Eivør Pálsdóttir strong vocals meet bassist Lennart Ginman’s exceptional jazz noir.

Steen Rasmussen Quinteto has long ago established itself as one of the best musical takes on Brazilian inspired jazz with a personal expression and deep intimacy with the genre. The quintet will be joined by the Swedish singer Josefine Cronholm and the world famous Brazilian drummer – “the father of Brazilian drums” – Paulo Braga. The young French pianist and composer Eve Risser has with her creative shifting temperament aroused deserved attention on the international jazz and experimental scene and can be seen at Jazz by the Sea performing with her 11-man White Desert Orchestra.
