John Scofield set to perform two solo concerts in Copenhagen
American guitar icon John Scofield is no stranger to Copenhagen, having performed numerous concerts here – at The Royal Theatre, in DR Koncerthuset and more. The nationwide Vinterjazz 2019 in February will see a return from the lauded guitarist with two exclusive solo nights at Jazzhus Montmartre
Since debuting in the 1970s, three-times Grammy recipient Scofield has held a firm position as one of the world’s greatest jazz guitarists. John Scofield rose to fame as a sideman for luminaries like Charles Mingus and Miles Davis, and has since enjoyed widespread acclaim fronting his own combos on more than 30 albums. His open minded approach to jazz, fusion, R&B and rock has made Scofield a household item the world over. John Scofield’s unhindered creativity, combined with his always recognizable sound and style, has in turn inspired a new generation of post-Scofield jazz guitarists. Scofield is among the first international heavy hitters to join the line-up for Vinterjazz 2019 – other prominent announced acts so far include: GoGo Penguin (UK), Blicher Hemmer Gadd (DK/US), Dinosaur (UK), Joe Armon-Jones (UK), Jakob Bro/Thomas Morgan/Joey Baron (US), Craig Taborn (US), Adam Ben Ezra (IR), Fofoulah (UK/GM), Ólafur Arnalds (IS), Arild Andersen (NO), Shining (NO), Bror Gunnar Jansson (SE).
Following the announcement of his two concerts at Jazzhus Montmartre, John Scofield has forwarded a few thoughts to the festival audience: “My main focus in guitar playing has always centered around being part of a group; exploring the music that happens when musicians listen to each other and improvise together. Quite frankly, until now, I’ve avoided playing solo concerts and have done only one solo performance in public since I was a child. I hadn’t considered solo guitar as the perfect platform for improvising. Now, after playing guitar for 56 years, I’m finally interested in going it alone and exploring the possibilities. It’s taken me decades to realize that I’ve been playing unaccompanied guitar at home or in hotel rooms every day since 1962! I’ve put a lot of thought in lately to how I can present an evening of solo guitar that represents my passions and sensibilities. My idea is to keep it song-based, playing jazz, country and rock tunes that I love as well as some of my original compositions. I’ve been preparing for nearly a year, working my brain in new directions while looking forward to these shows with excitement and a small bit of trepidation. I hope you enjoy being on this journey with me.”
Vinterjazz has been a nationwide musical festival in February since 2001. Vinterjazz’ purpose is to kickstart the jazz season for venues, jazz clubs, unions, audience and media and of course the musicians, who benefit from the period’s increased activity by getting the chance to take up tours. The festival is a joint venture between Copenhagen Jazz Festival and more than 120 venues and organizers all over Denmark. Vinterjazz 2019 takes place from Februar 1-24.
