Jazzy British invasion hits Vinterjazz 2019

While not officially a theme at Vinterjazz 2019, the past few years have seen a resurgence of British experimental jazz, often exemplified by London-based saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings. The audience at the forthcoming Vinterjazz will get plenty of opportunities to experience this new wave of British jazz, especially in Odense, where local venue Teater Momentum are hosting three of its main proponents – Dinosaur, Joe Armon-Jones and Fofoulah.

Fofoulah (UK/GM)

Fofoulah is London-based afro-dub ensemble. In November 2018 the group released its second album, “Daega Rek”, on the venerable label Glitterbeat. The sonic structures of Fofoulah and their musical identity is anchored in the Senegalese drum, the sabar. This unique drum is mixed with electronic glitch and dubby textures and taken for a spin by the band’s drum’n’bass leanings to ultimately end up as an extremely danceable performance.

Dinosaur (UK)

Dinosaur is pyrotechnic electronica-meets-fusion jazz. The band hails from the prolific scene in London and received a nomination for the prestigious Mercury Award for their debut album, “Together, As One”. Dinosaur is led by young comet Laura Jurd – self-professed fan of Miles Davis, Terry Riley and Ian Carr. Jurd and Dinosaur walk along the same musical paths as Carr with their elegant “jazzification” elements from rock, synth pop, funky electronica and new wave.

Joe Armon-Jones (UK)

Joe Armon-Jones is a synth wiz and a regular on the up and coming jazz scene in London. Armon-Jones put out his debut, “Starting Today”, earlier this year on the acclaimed label Brownswood. The album enjoyed visits from three other associated top acts on the London scene: Moses Boyd, Nubya Garcia and Jerome Oscar – a line-up fit for a composer in the midst of constructive creative turmoil. The music of Joe Armon-Jones consists of a nexus of impulses, drawing on equal parts downtown New Orleans and British dub central Hackney in London. Joe Armon-Jones is music for jazz enthusiasts and “club kids” alike.
