Vinterjazz 2019: ECM luminaries break musical boundaries
The German record label ECM (Edition of Contemporary Music) has stood as a preeminent curator of atmospheric and genre-breaking jazz and beyond since its inception by founder Manfred Eicher in 1969. At Vinterjazz 2019 you will get the chance to experience three of the label’s foremost artists.
Egberto Gismonti (BRA)
Brazilian pianist, guitarist and composer Egberto Gismonti rose to fame during the 1970s with his unique blend of Brazilian traditionals, European classical composition and jazz. His debut on ECM, “Dança das Cabeças”, came out in 1977 and Gismonti has been a staple at the iconic label ever since. At Vinterjazz 2019 Egberto Gismonti is joined by saxophonist Lars Møller and The Orchestra – a large-format ensemble – in the impressive setting in Dronningesalen at The Royal Library/Den Sorte Diamant.
Jakob Bro/Thomas Morgan/Joey Baron (US)
The internationally renowned Danish guitarist and composer Jakob Bro returns to Vinterjazz 2019 with his acclaimed transatlantic trio – Thomas Morgan on double bass and drummer Joey Baron, both known for their longterm collaboration with guitar icon Bill Frisell. The unit released their lauded first album, “Streams”, in 2016. Their second outing, “Bay of Rainbows”, was released earlier this fall and this album will be the focal point for the trio’s concerts at Vinterjazz.
Craig Taborn (US)
American pianist Craig Taborn belongs to the absolute elite within genre-crossing nu-jazz on the international scene. Especially European classical music and the vigorous pianistic excesses from the 20th century is high on Taborn’s list of inspirations. His eminent control of the endless possibilities of the piano and his unending fantasy, combined with a gorgeous swing, makes Craig Taborn one of today’s most interesting pianists.
