Legendary Pharoah Sanders set for two nights at Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2018
Ornette Coleman once described the American saxophonist Pharoah Sanders as “probably the best tenor player in the world.” Living legend Sanders performed at the very first Copenhagen Jazz Festival back in 1979 – now he returns for the festival’s 40th edition this summer.
Pharoah Sanders rose to fame as an integral part of John Coltrane’s groups in the mid-1960s. He is one of the pivotal figures in the historical development of free jazz and its spiritual branch alongside artists such as Alice Coltrane, Archie Shepp, Charles Lloyd and others. Sanders is easily recognizable and well-known for his rarified sound and technique, able to effortlessly encompass both overblowing, harmonics and multiphonics in his singular approach to the saxophone. His eminent talent was already evident in the early stages of his career, and this led his peer Albert Ayler to establish a famously biblical jazz lineage: “Trane was the Father, Pharoah was the Son, I am the Holy Ghost”.
The track “The Creator Has A Master Plan” from the album “Karma” (1969) is often mentioned in the same breath as its spiritual predecessor, John Coltrane’s classic “A Love Supreme”, and is considered a landmark in the history of cosmic jazz. Sanders has been sampled by everyone from Herbie Hancock to J Dilla and Four Tet and continues to be an almost inexhaustible source of inspiration for a wide variety of younger musicians including Kamasi Washington and many others.
Pharoah Sanders has enriched music as such with his unique combination of political and social awareness, Spirituals, Gospel, Soul and Avant-garde Jazz. Copenhagen Jazz Festival and Alice cph are proud to present this very special entity in the intimate locales in Brorson’s Church at the festival’s 40th edition.
Line-up: Pharoah Sanders (sax), William Henderson (piano), Oli Hayhurst (bass) and Gene Calderazzo (drums).
