Avalanche Kaito has very precisely been described as “grrriot_punk_noise.” In this Burkinabe-Belgian trio, singer Kaito Winse brings griot traditions into a completely unexpected context, which works exceptionally well. Alongside the multifaceted drummer and “pure dataist” Benjamin Chaval and anarchic guitarist Nico Gitto, Winse delivers an explosive combination of trance-inducing rhythms, abrasive punk and noise, and griot singing, accompanied by traditional instruments such as the Peul flute, Tama, and mouth bow. It’s aggressive and raw, yet deeply original and with a great sense of humor.
Not surprisingly, the group gained attention after their first concert in Belgium in July 2021. Avalanche Kaito quickly gained momentum, touring Europe and Canada in the following months, performing over fifty times at various festivals and clubs, including showcase festivals like MIL, ESNS, and Womex. Wherever they go, they captivate audiences with their extremely infectious live energy and rebellious attitude, not to mention Kaito Winse’s unparalleled stage performance – often engaging with the audience.
In 2022, Avalanche Kaito released their first EP, “Dabalomuni,” followed by a critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, both on the iconic Glitterbeat Records, known for strong acts such as Gaye Su Akyol, Bassekou Kouyate, and Joshua Abrams & Natural Information Society. We are thrilled to present Avalanche Kaito when they perform at ALICE during Winter Jazz.
